Ingest in Practice

This online training session introduces ADS and HSDS users to Ingest, our new deposit system for archaeological and heritage data.

💡 New to Ingest? We recommend attending an Introduction to Ingest training session before joining this session. This training session is designed for users who have completed basic training and want to go deeper with their own datasets.

About This Session

This interactive training session is a follow-on session for ADS and HSDS users who have completed our Introduction to Ingest training session. This session moves from the basics into real-world application by focusing on how to complete metadata templates accurately and efficiently as well as structuring complex, multi-phased projects within Ingest.

What You'll Learn

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  1. Explain how collection-level and file-level metadata differ in what they describe and how they are entered into Ingest.
  2. Determine which specialised formats require additional preparation or technical metadata before upload.
  3. Apply efficient techniques for completing file-level metadata templates at scale, including for datasets with large numbers of files such as bulk photography.
  4. Produce a completed metadata template for a dataset of their own, ready for upload via Ingest.
  5. Evaluate how best to structure a multi-phased project within Ingest, weighing options such as single vs. staged deposits.

Before You Attend

1. Attend a 'Introduction to Ingest' training session If you are new to Ingest, we recommend attending an Introduction to Ingest training session before joining this session.

2. Prepare your materials We recommended that you use your own dataset during the hands-on practice to better replicate real-world conditions. However, if you do not have a dataset to hand a training dataset will be provided at the start of the session — no preparation needed.

3. Check your technical setup - A working Zoom connection (camera optional, microphone recommended) - A modern web browser (Chrome or Firefox recommended) - Access to the Ingest system via UMA
